Taunton Vale was, to many of the Devon team, an unknown quantity and therefore very welcome as a new experience. Although the golf course may not be as familiar as other courses in the County it proved to be well received. The fairly unremarkable land had obviously been creatively designed to provide features which a number of holes demanded quality golf shots and were also pleasing to the eye. Our travelling meteorologists were unfortunately wrong, on this occasion, for most of the round showery rain required waterproofs. As is so often the norm these days four reserves were called upon to field our team, thank goodness we have a … [Read more...]

Devon Captains’ versus Gloucester Captains’
The Captain with Ted Rockey, Brian Harris and John Bailey The match that never was! Gloucester withdrew from this fixture because one of their Captain's had recently passed away and his funeral was on this very day, unfortunately Gloucester chose not to rearrange the fixture. To his great credit the Captain elected to try and rescue the booking with Tavistock GC, he and David Beer set about approaching all who had applied for this match. Success provided a 14 per side match within ourselves, for some reason named the "Improbables and the Impossibles" ! I'm sure Tavistock GC appreciated his efforts in supporting the Club … [Read more...]
Devon Golf Captains’ versus Devon Ladies Golf Captains’
The Captain's with their teams posed for a photograph for submission to the Kingsbridge Gazette, fame at last! There were good reasons to celebrate with a glass or two and a splendid meal at Bigbury. En route to the golf club Judi Spiers reminded listeners that the terrible floods at Boscastle and Crackington were ten years ago this weekend. The terrible forecast for the day had encouraged players to phone in to make sure the match was still on. Play we did and other than a few spiteful showers we managed to miss the really bad weather, that occurred in other parts of the County. This was Roger's first opportunity to welcome and entertain … [Read more...]
Devon Captains’ versus Cornwall Captains’
Captains Roger and Gary with partners Adrian and Roger After a visit across the Welsh border, where we received a real trouncing, our Devonshire marauders crossed the Tamar to do battle with "the old enemy". Instead of our one longstanding "mole" within the Dukedom of Kernow, Ted Rockey, we now have two! John Sweet, (Exeter 1977) has recently returned to full match fitness, after a five year lay off through injury, and has lived in Cornwall for many years. The advantages were to be of little benefit however both men fell to determined Cornish play, despite both having very strong partners. The match swung Cornwall's way early on … [Read more...]
Devon Captains’ versus South Wales Coastal Captains’
The day began with the invasion of Wales by the Devon Captains paying £6.40 for the privilege of playing in the Principality, hmmm ! Driving into the long entrance to St Pierre it was obvious that the lush parkland course was in good condition, as usual. Soon we were joined by some very familiar faces from St Pierre and friendships were toasted in local ales, these included Secretary Arnie Pidgeon, Eric Brown and John Jones all in fine fettle, except for Eric who informed that he is currently on the "Welsh Hip List", didn't affect his golf though ! Unusually, once all were gathered, we had our bacon baps and coffee al fresco at the Halfway … [Read more...]
Devon Captains’ versus South West Secretaries at Worlebury G C
Captain Roger with Tony Edge and opponents Jon Mills (SWS Captain) and Will Hendry Glorious sunshine greeted all players with views out over the Bristol Channel looking towards Wales with the Millenium Stadium in the distance. This match was played for a trophy presented by Martin Lowry in 2004, long time Secretary of Bigbury Golf Club, so both teams were inspired to play their best golf. The team was led by the Captain Roger who was playing with Tony Edge who has been suffering a long term injury - welcome back Tony - a good win 4-3. The second game went the way of Secretary/Manager with an on-loan Devon … [Read more...]
Devon Captains’ versus Dorset Captains’ at Churston GC
Captain's Roger and Derek with partners Gordon and Ron The day began with an ominous but albeit welcome weather forecast, heavy rain showers throughout the late morning and early afternoon ! Churston, like so many golf courses at the moment, in need of some rain to soften and "green up" some fairways. The reality was a few sharp and spiteful downpours with greens threatening to flood, on some holes. However the rainfall was nowhere near the feared torrents forecast, so welcome the measured amount and return the course to its usual lush quality. For some however the rain was such a shock that shelter was sought quite illegally, therefore … [Read more...]
Captain’s Day at Bigbury GC September 18 Thursday
The Captain with the Bowering Salver winner Steve Willcocks Traditionally the half-term break is celebrated by way of Captain's Day, the finale this year at Bigbury GC where Roger Monson was Captain in 1999. Arriving at the golf club at 7.30am with Chris Morton yours truly and of course as ever our stalwart and invaluable Secretary Roy Smith. Closely followed by Henry Paget completing the Admin team. Already there of course the Captain plus the club's golf Director Nigel Blenkarne, incidentally Nigel was still present until way past 9pm the conclusion of events, a marvellous role model to all Secretary/Managers. Also good to have Chris … [Read more...]

Devon Captains’ versus Shropshire & Herefordshire Captains
DGCvSalop18_6Pairings DGCvSalop19_6Pairings The Shropshire Captains Tour to Devon on 18th & 19th June had a much more relaxed feeling with shorts being worn in the glorious sunshine at Okehampton Golf Club, in contrast to the rain of their previous tour in 2012. Captains Roger Monson and Joe Morley led the way with host Captain Adrian Tilley who was playing in his first Devon Captains match, and this result was a honourable half. The second game with the two previous Captains Peter Dunstan and Mike Penlington set the mood with a good 4 & 3 win. County President Mike Jewell played with Mike Badcock in the 6th game and … [Read more...]
